The truth about ANWRHere are a few facts you might not have known about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The entire refuge has been portrayed as an idyllic slice of wilderness with lots of wildlife, plants and mountains. The southern three-quarters of ANWR does include some of that, but the northern quarter, where proposed oil drilling would take place, is flat, barren and desolate. ANWR's coastal plain has about 1.2 million acres, and only about 2,000 acres are identified for oil extraction. The actual drilling sites would occupy only a tiny fraction of the 2,000 acres. The area sits on hundreds of feet of permafrost. There are no trees and no permanent wildlife. The caribou that supposedly would be endangered do not have regular migratory patterns and have passed through the area only four times in the last 10 years. The drilling site lies only about 75 miles east of Prudhoe Bay, the site of the existing oil pipeline. This existing pipeline would be used to carry ANWR oil to the south. There would not be another Alaskan Pipeline. Prudhoe Bay has not turned out to be the disaster environmentalists predicted. Recent visitors to Prudhoe described it as pristine. The only settlement in the area is a community of 280 Inuit natives, who view ANWR drilling as critical to continuing their lifestyle. They are shareholders in the ANWR mineral rights. They are plagued by astronomical prices because of their remoteness. Drilling is essential to them. We need to stop this foolishness and start drilling our own oil. U.S. Rep. Ron Kind said we wouldn't get a drop of oil for five years. This isn't very forward-looking. If we hadn't been so foolish as to listen to people like him in the past we would have been pumping ANWR oil for years. |
