| Patrick Hughes Student - Son - Climate Activist ![]() I am Patrick Hughes, a High School Freshman, a Son and a Climate Activist, concerned about the world in which I live and its future. My goal is to make my life and high school experience as full and interesting as it can be. I plan to make a difference in this world while I am here and as the poet Mary Oliver says “I don’t want to end up simply having visited this world.” I want what most people my age want, but more than that I want to pick up my responsibility to develop and use my abilities to facilitate positive change in the world. I try to live that everyday, and I have been lucky enough to find others recently like, Dr. William Greene with RightMarch who are willing to help me. I hope in the future to inspire many who will rise up to use their abilities to answer the call of their responsibility, their duty, to themselves and those less able to speak up to help me and others make the changes in this county and the world to ensure a brighter future. I was named after my Great Uncle Patrick Edward Hughes, Jr. After my Uncle Pat passed away, my grandfather brought me a painting of a camo-painted Prop fighter plane flying through the sky that that my great uncle wanted me to have. We hung the painting in my room and seeing it hanging there I began to wonder about who my Great Uncle was. My Great Uncle Pat was a climate scientist - that’s what they called them then. He wrote a few books and articles including, “A Century of Weather Service; A History of the Birth and Growth of the National Weather Service, 1870-1970” and “American Weather Stories” which comments how “American weather has helped shape our culture, national character, folklore, and conversation. It has frequented the pages of our history and, at times, changed its course… “ As I read about what he had done and learned more about the trends and changes in the scientific community related to climatology, as well as the larger environmental community, I began to discover that some things did not make sense. People were misusing issues related to the environment, and our climate for their own means. Their interest was not in what was best for all of us, but best for only a few, or best for someone’s bank account, not best for you and me. My uncle’s legacy led me to many insights and to honor what his work started and in the pursuit or what is right, I believe I have the responsibility to do whatever I can to proclaim the truth. The truth is that we all want to do what we can to care for this planet we live on, to keep it safe for the children we will have, and theirs and for all future generations, but we have a responsibility to understand the choices we are making, the ramifications of what we are told is the “right” thing to do and to protect those who live now as well as those who will inherit the results of the choices made today. We have an obligation to make Smart Choices to be environmentally conscious, not to be led into “green” choices simply because someone has proclaimed them to be best for our future. I’ve tried to be as active and as informed as I can, both in school and out of school, to question the facts, to look deeper into the questions, and I have found that many of those proclaiming the truth, clearly are working from a truth of their own, which is why I am devoting my time and energy to bring light into the corners of these “truths” and expose the realities. “Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.” - The Declaration of Independence (1776) I am after all a freshman in high school and I want to have an incredible year in school, make new friends through after school activities and through the school’s block scheduling program which brings me in contact with students in all grade levels. Most recently I had a lead in my schools production of “Les Miserables”, playing the part of the very adored Gavroche and I also played the part of the Lion in “A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream”. I enjoy my classes, particularly my science and American cultures classes. I am usually the one with all the questions, wanting to know why it is the way it is. Recently one of my teachers reported that “Pat is enthusiastic and I appreciate his spunk.” In the past I was usually called argumentative and difficult; “Enthusiastic” and “Spunk,” I think I am making progress. High School has definitely encouraged my innate curiosity and desire to learn. I am encouraged to explore the world around me and question the facts; college will be amazing. I want my children and grand children to have the same opportunity to pursue their goals and do what every child wants to do when they are growing up. I will put aside some of my childish pursuits to work to be sure they get the chance to use their abilities. ~Patrick Hughes SmartGreenUSA Climate Activist |

The purpose of the ads is to explain to the public the extent to which the legislation could damage the economy, should it pass. "The number of jobs that will be lost, the rise in price in gasoline and electricity, the loss in GDP -- it's all astronomical. And we think it's important for people to know what's going on ..." The legislation is a "massive redistribution of wealth," and the organization is asking concerned citizens to call their senators and urge them to oppose the measure. "A nation of well informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the region of ignorance that tyranny begins."
Benjamin Franklin "The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil Constitution, are worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors: they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or to be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men."
